Lighter DEX
Lighter is a decentralized perpetual futures exchange in crypto, published at lighter.xyz — not a cigarette lighter. Independent notes from Koi, which is not affiliated with it.
Updated 17 Aug 2026. Category facts stated plainly. Anything from news coverage is attributed as reporting.
Lighter is a decentralized perpetual futures exchange: a crypto venue where people take leveraged long and short positions on contracts that never expire. Its public site is lighter.xyz. This page is about that venue and nothing else. It is not about a cigarette lighter, a Zippo, a butane refill, or a windproof torch, and if that is what brought you here, nothing below will help.
The name collides badly in search, which is why the word barely appears on this page without “dex,” “crypto,” or “perpetual futures” attached to it. That is a deliberate habit, not a tic.
Koi is not Lighter, is not affiliated with Lighter, and does not run a perps venue of its own. These notes exist because the Robinhood Chain ecosystem got loud in mid-2026 and most of what ranks for it is either a venue’s own copy or a headline.
What we will state plainly
- Lighter is a decentralized perpetual futures exchange. That is a category fact, the same way “Uniswap is an AMM” is one.
- Its public site is lighter.xyz. We are not linking deeper than that, because we would be inventing paths.
- It is a separate thing from Robinhood Chain. The chain is a network. Lighter is an application that has been reported as running on it. “Lighter is Robinhood Chain” is simply wrong.
- If you want the mechanism rather than the venue — funding, margin, liquidation — read perpetual futures first.
What is only reporting
Everything in this section came from news coverage. We did not verify any of it against a contract, an explorer, or an audit, and we are not passing it along as though we had.
- July 2026: multiple outlets reported that Robinhood Chain mainnet went live alongside a Lighter instance and a perps integration in Robinhood Wallet, with some writeups describing Paxos USDG as the collateral and quote asset.
- Later coverage, including The Defiant, reported that Lighter accepts Robinhood Stock Tokens as margin on Robinhood Chain.
- Launch coverage reported that access was restricted for users in the United States and the United Kingdom.
We have deliberately left out the numbers that travelled with those stories: volume prints, valuation, revenue splits, token buyback figures, points multipliers, gas subsidies. Some of them may be accurate. All of them decay, and a stale figure quoted confidently is worse than no figure at all. Go to the venue and to the outlet that published it.
Lighter, Hyperliquid, Arcus, Koi
| Name | What it is | Why it comes up here |
|---|---|---|
| Hyperliquid | Perpetual futures venue | The category brand. Most people searching for perps type this name, and we are not competing for it. |
| Lighter | Perpetual futures venue | Reported as the perps engine behind the Robinhood Wallet integration. The name collides with butane products, so the qualifier matters. |
| Arcus | Also listed by Robinhood under perps and stock-token spot | We have no page on it and will not describe a stack we have not read. |
| Koi | Not a venue | A team that writes notes. No perps, no order routing, no derivatives product. |
That comparison is qualitative on purpose. Ranking these by volume or TVL would mean publishing numbers we have not checked, in a category where they change weekly.
Perps on Robinhood Chain
The short answer: Robinhood Chain is permissionless, venues have appeared on it, and Robinhood’s own ecosystem notes name Lighter and Arcus under perps. Koi is not one of them and is not trying to become one.
Being listed on an ecosystem page is a description, not a safety rating. Robinhood did not underwrite those venues for you and neither did we.
Stock tokens as margin
Robinhood Stock Tokens are ERC-20s giving economic exposure to a share or ETF — spot-like, with no expiry or funding of their own. What was reported is that a perps venue began accepting them as collateral, which is a different claim from a tokenized stock becoming a derivative. The wider category is real-world assets, and it is where most of the interesting collateral questions on this chain are going to land.
Questions people actually type
What is Lighter?
A decentralized perpetual futures exchange, published at lighter.xyz. Leveraged long and short positions on contracts with no expiry date.
Is Lighter a cigarette lighter?
No. This page is the crypto venue. Zippo, Bic, butane refills, and torch lighters are a different search entirely, and we have nothing useful to say about them.
Is Lighter the same as Robinhood Chain?
No. Robinhood Chain is a Layer-2 network with its own chain ID. Lighter is a separate venue reported as running an instance on it. One is a road, the other is a shop.
Does Koi offer perps?
No. Koi is the team behind a sunset zkSync protocol, now writing about Robinhood Chain. No derivatives venue, no routing, no announcement.
